After having arrived in Ireland this summer, Ambassador Dr. Eckhard Lübkemeier and his wife Annegret Lübkemeier hosted the traditional reception on Germany’s Day of National Unity for the first time.
In his speech the Ambassador reiterated what he had said to the Irish President when presenting his credentials less than three weeks ago: “Ireland and Germany enjoy very close and friendly relations. Our two nations are neighbours in Europe, and they are partners for Europe: a democratic Europe that is peaceful and prosperous at home and that cooperates with others as a fair partner.”
He also highligthed a central theme contained in the messages of Federal President Christian Wulff and Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle on the occasion of Germany’s Day of Unity: “The Wall and the Iron Curtain not only divided Germany, they also divided Europe. Therefore, we not only celebrate German reunification today. We can also celebrate a Europe whole and free, a democratic, peaceful and prosperous Europe that is our common future.”
Irish weather played its part by providing for a mild and dry evening. “Made in Germany” were not only Bratwurst as well as Beer and Wine but also cars on display produced by Audi, BMW, Mercedes Benz and Volkswagen. This year marks the 125thanniversary of carmaking in Germany. Therefore, in addition to 2011 models of two vintage cars were on display as well: A replica of the first automobile built in 1886 by Carl Benz and a 1970s Volkswagen Beetle reminding us of the fact that Ireland was the first country outside Germany where the Beetle was assembled in the the 1950s.
