In his speech the Ambassador reiterated what he had said to the Irish President when presenting his credentials less than three weeks ago: “Ireland and Germany enjoy very close and friendly relations. Our two nations are neighbours in Europe, and they are partners for Europe: a democratic Europe that is peaceful and prosperous at home and that cooperates with others as a fair partner.”

He also highligthed a central theme contained in the messages of Federal President Christian Wulff and Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle on the occasion of Germany’s Day of Unity: “The Wall and the Iron Curtain not only divided Germany, they also divided Europe. Therefore, we not only celebrate German reunification today. We can also celebrate a Europe whole and free, a democratic, peaceful and prosperous Europe that is our common future.”

Irish weather played its part by providing for a mild and dry evening. “Made in Germany” were not only Bratwurst as well as Beer and Wine but also cars on display produced by Audi, BMW, Mercedes Benz and Volkswagen. This year marks the 125thanniversary of carmaking in Germany. Therefore, in addition to 2011 models of two vintage cars were on display as well: A replica of the first automobile built in 1886 by Carl Benz and a 1970s Volkswagen Beetle reminding us of the fact that Ireland was the first country outside Germany where the Beetle was assembled in the the 1950s.

The Ambassador's speech on the occasion of the Day of German Unity

This is a first for me in more than one way. As Dublin is my first ambassadorial posting, this is the first time that I am hosting a National Day celebration. Secondly, this is my first major event after taking up my post. My most important message is a simple one: I am delighted to be here, and I feel privileged to be the representative of my country in Ireland.

Day of German Unity

Message from Federal President Christian Wulff on the Day of German Unity 2011

Bundespräsident Christian Wulff

On 3 October we Germans remember with joy and gratitude our national unity, which we regained on 3 October 1990. On that day, our nation’s decades of division came to an end.

Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Westerwelle on the occasion of the Day of German Unity

Dr Guido Westerwelle

The Berlin Wall was built 50 years ago. It was toppled 28 years later by people who took a courageous stand for their freedom. The moving images of the peaceful revolution of 1989 still linger in my mind.
