Mr Alois Karl, member of the German Parliament (Bundestag) and rapporteur for Ireland of the Bundestag's Committee for European Affairs, visited Ireland from 17-25 August 2011.
He met parliamentary colleagues in Leinster House and was briefed by officials of the Departments of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Finance as well as Public Expenditure and Reform.
After viewing and enjoying Dublin, he went to the west of Ireland accompanied by his wife (pictured on the left). He had meetings in Killarney with the Mayor and the German company Liebherr. In a private part of his trip, he had the occassion to tour some of the highlights of western Ireland (in counties Galway, Clare, Kerry and Limerick).
Mr Karl said "I have stood up very early in the Bundestag to speak against linking the interest rate for the EU/IMF loans with Ireland's corporate tax rate. I am delighted that a lowering of the interest rate has been agreed in the meantime. Ireland has undertaken great and courageous efforts to balance public expenditure. I am very optimistic about Ireland's ability to grow out of the crisis."
