The Political Section maintains contact with the government, parliament, the different parties and numerous non-governmental organisations. It observes Irish foreign and domestic policy and keeps the official Irish departments informed about developments in Germany, in particular the Federal German Government's foreign and European policy.
On December 5, 2011, ten years after the first Afghanistan Conference at the Petersberg near Bonn, leading representatives of the international community will again be meeting to discuss the future of the country in the Hindu Kush. At the conference, which is being headed by the Afghan government under the motto “From Transition to Transformation”, Germany will be hosting around 90 international delegations.

Afghanistan is to be enabled to ensure its own security within an appropriate period of time. This can only be done step by step in conjunction with the international community. The German government adopted a national strategy paper which outlines the path that is to lead to full Afghan responsibility.
