PAD scholarships for Irish students

Each year, the German pedagogical exchange serivce (PAD) offers 29 scholarships for Irish transition year students to take part in language courses in Germany. The programmes are funded by the German Foreign Office.
A direct application for such a scholarship is not possible. The selection is based on the students' performances in German in the previous Junior Certificate Examination. The best 70 students are invited by the Department of Education and Skills to an interview/language test at the Goethe Institut in Dublin which traditionally takes place in March each year. The 5 best students are awarded a 4week fully sponsored language course in Germany between June and September. The scholarship includes trips to Cologne/Bonn, Berlin and Munich as well as a 2-week stay with a German family, during which the Irish students go to school with their German counterparts.
Other 24 Irish students are selected for participation in 3 week language courses in Germany. Expenses for accomodation, meals, trips and the language course are paid for. Only travel and insurance costs will have to be borne by the students i.e. their parents.
The groups are accompanied by an Irish teacher. If one of the parents holds the nationality of a German-speaking country, the student will unfortunately not be able to enter the competition for the two programmes.
Congratulations to all students who won a scholarship this year!
The Embassy would like to thank the German Teachers' Association of Ireland which has kindly funded the air tickets for the two teachers!
